California-based rock and roll group The Growlers inhabit a musical landscape that takes some effort to categorize. “Beach goth,” like the festival the band has curated for several years now, seems to do a fair job juxtaposing its many sounds, but even that tag leaves much to the imagination. In addition to the garage and pop influences the group wears on its sleeve, its latest album, City Club—out on The Strokes frontman Julian Casablanca’s Cult Records, no less—flexes a little dub and new wave muscle, complete with The Growlers’ most polished production to date. Try to pin them down this Friday at the 40 Watt.
